Senior Superconducting Systems Engineer

Location: Tallahassee, FL

Team: Superconducting Energy Systems

R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach. As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.

R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.

The Role

As a Senior Superconducting Systems Engineer, you will define and own the system-level behavior of superconducting wire systems operating in real infrastructure environments. Your work will directly shape how superconducting energy systems are designed, controlled, and deployed at scale. You will collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, cryogenic, controls, AI, and cloud engineering teams to translate superconducting physics into measurable signals, safe operating limits, and deployable system architectures. This is a hands-on, first-principles role at the intersection of physics, engineering, and real-world operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Define electrical, thermal, and operational behavior of superconducting wire systems under real operating conditions
• Establish system-level operating limits, safety margins, and failure modes
• Translate physical behavior into measurable signals for control, monitoring, and AI systems
• Lead system architecture decisions across superconducting wire, cryogenic containment, and power interfaces
• Partner closely with controls, embedded, AI, and cloud teams to ensure controllability and observability
• Support testing, validation, and deployment of first-of-kind superconducting systems
• Own system-level documentation, assumptions, and design tradeoffs
• Mentor engineers and contribute to a culture of technical rigor and ownership

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or related STEM field plus 8+ years of relevant experience, or MS/PhD with equivalent applied experience
• Deep understanding of power systems, superconductivity, or advanced energy systems
• Experience modeling electrical and thermal behavior of complex systems
• Proven ability to work across disciplines and translate theory into practical design decisions
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with a focus on clear technical documentation

Nice to Have

• Experience with high-temperature superconductors (HTS)
• Background in national labs, advanced energy startups, or applied R&D environments
• Familiarity with cryogenic systems and LN₂ operation
• Experience supporting systems beyond laboratory settings into real-world deployment

Export Compliance

This role may involve access to technologies subject to U.S. export control regulations.
Employment is contingent upon eligibility to comply with applicable export control laws.

Equal Opportunity

R-Materials is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.

Employment Type
