Senior Safety & Reliability Engineer
Location: Tallahassee, FL
Team: Safety, Reliability & Systems Assurance
R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach.
As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.
R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
As a Senior Safety & Reliability Engineer, you will define and own the safety and reliability strategy across superconducting energy systems, spanning hardware, software, controls, and operations.
Your work will ensure that complex, high-energy systems operate safely under normal conditions, degrade gracefully under faults, and recover predictably from failures. You will collaborate across superconducting systems, embedded control, AI, cloud, and application teams to embed safety and reliability into every layer of the system.
This is a senior role focused on system assurance, hazard prevention, and long-term operational integrity.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead hazard analysis, failure mode identification, and risk assessment across systems
• Define safety requirements, reliability targets, and fail-safe behaviors
• Design and review fault detection, isolation, and recovery strategies
• Collaborate with control and AI teams to ensure safe decision-making under uncertainty
• Define safety constraints for cloud-to-edge control pathways
• Support validation, testing, and incident review processes
• Establish documentation and traceability for safety-critical decisions
• Mentor engineers and promote a culture of safety, rigor, and accountability
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, or related field) plus 7+ years of relevant experience, or MS with equivalent applied experience
• Strong experience with safety-critical or high-reliability systems
• Familiarity with failure analysis methods (FMEA, FTA, hazard analysis)
• Ability to reason about complex system interactions and edge cases
• Experience working across hardware and software boundaries
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
• Experience in energy, industrial, aerospace, or critical infrastructure systems
• Familiarity with safety or reliability standards (IEC, ISO, MIL, or similar)
• Experience working with autonomous or AI-driven systems
• Exposure to cryogenic or high-energy environments
Export Compliance
This role may involve access to technologies subject to U.S. export control regulations.
Employment is contingent upon eligibility to comply with applicable export control laws.
Equal Opportunity
R-Materials is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.
