AI / Control Intelligence Engineer

Location: Tallahassee, FL

Team: Control Intelligence & AI Systems

R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach. As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.

R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.

The Role

As an AI / Control Intelligence Engineer, you will develop models and algorithms that help superconducting energy systems predict instability, detect anomalies, and respond intelligently to changing conditions. You will work alongside senior engineers and cross-functional teams to build, test, and deploy AI systems that operate continuously and safely in real-world environments. This role is ideal for engineers who want to grow expertise in applied AI, control systems, and time-series intelligence.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and train machine learning models using time-series operational data
• Support anomaly detection, prediction, and control optimization pipelines
• Assist in integrating AI outputs into control and monitoring systems
• Collaborate with controls, embedded, and cloud teams on end-to-end system behavior
• Participate in validation, testing, and performance evaluation of models
• Contribute to documentation and model explainability efforts
• Follow best practices for reliability, safety, and observability

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related STEM field
• 2–5 years of experience in machine learning, data science, or control-related roles
• Experience working with time-series data
• Proficiency in Python and common ML frameworks
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines

Nice to Have

• Exposure to control theory, optimization, or system dynamics
• Experience with energy systems, industrial data, or physical infrastructure
• Familiarity with simulation or modeling tools
• Interest in deploying AI beyond research environments

Export Compliance

This role may involve access to technologies subject to U.S. export control regulations.
Employment is contingent upon eligibility to comply with applicable export control laws.

Equal Opportunity

R-Materials is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.
