Embedded / Edge Control Engineer
Location: Tallahassee, FL
Team: Embedded & Edge Control Systems
R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach. As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.
R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
As an Embedded / Edge Control Engineer, you will implement and support the real-time software that operates superconducting wire systems and energy storage infrastructure at the edge.
You will work closely with senior embedded engineers and cross-functional teams, including superconducting systems, mechanical, electrical, AI, and cloud engineers, to build reliable, deterministic control software that executes safely under real-world conditions.
This role is ideal for engineers who want to grow deep expertise in embedded systems while contributing to safety-critical infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
• Implement embedded and real-time control software for superconducting wire systems and SMES energy storage
• Support development of state machines, safety interlocks, and monitoring logic
• Integrate sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces
• Assist in defining and testing interfaces between edge systems and cloud control platforms
• Participate in system integration, validation, and deployment activities
• Support troubleshooting and root-cause analysis during testing and early deployments
• Contribute to code reviews, documentation, and testing procedures
• Follow best practices for safety-critical and real-time software development
Qualifications
• • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM field
• 2–5 years of experience developing embedded or real-time systems
• Experience with C/C++ (or Rust) in embedded environments
• Familiarity with real-time concepts such as interrupts, timing constraints, and state machines
• Basic understanding of hardware interfaces (GPIO, SPI, I²C, CAN, etc.)
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Clear written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
• Exposure to industrial control systems, PLCs, or automation
• Experience with RTOS or bare-metal embedded systems
• Familiarity with energy systems, power electronics, or control theory
• Experience integrating embedded systems with cloud or networked services
• Interest in safety-critical or high-reliability systems
Export Compliance
This role may involve access to technologies subject to U.S. export control regulations.
Employment is contingent upon eligibility to comply with applicable export control laws.
Equal Opportunity
R-Materials is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.
Employment Type
Full-time
Compensation
Base salary range: $110,000 – $145,000 + equity
Salary will be based on several factors, including experience, expertise, and role level.
Comprehensive benefits package includes:
• Competitive compensation with equity
• Paid time off and company holidays
• Medical, dental, and vision coverage
• Paid parental leave
• 401(k) and retirement benefits
• Professional growth and learning opportunities
If you don’t meet 100% of the preferred qualifications, we encourage you to apply.
