Senior Application / UX Engineer (Control UI)
Location: Tallahassee, FL
Team: Application & Control Interface
R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach. As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.
R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.
The Role
As a Senior Application / UX Engineer (Control UI), you will design and own the user interfaces through which operators monitor, understand, and control superconducting energy systems. Your work will define how humans interact with real-time energy infrastructure, translating complex system behavior, AI decisions, and control states into clear, actionable interfaces. You will collaborate closely with cloud platform, AI, controls, and safety teams to ensure the UI supports safe, reliable, and intuitive operation. This is a senior role focused on UX ownership, system thinking, and high-stakes interface design.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and build real-time dashboards for monitoring and controlling energy systems
• Own UX decisions for operator workflows, alerts, and system visualization
• Translate complex system states and AI outputs into clear, actionable UI components
• Collaborate with controls and safety teams to ensure interfaces support safe operation
• Define interaction patterns for human-in-the-loop control systems
• Lead frontend architecture and performance decisions
• Support usability testing and continuous improvement based on operator feedback
• Mentor engineers and contribute to frontend and UX best practices
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Design Engineering, or a related STEM field plus 7+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent applied experience
• Strong experience building complex, data-driven web applications
• Proficiency with modern frontend frameworks (React, Next.js, or equivalent)
• Experience with real-time data visualization and state management
• Strong UX intuition for clarity, reliability, and operator trust
• Ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines
• Clear written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
• Experience designing interfaces for industrial, control, or safety-critical systems
• Familiarity with data visualization libraries (D3, WebGL, or similar)
• Experience working with time-series or streaming data
• Background in human-in-the-loop or mission-critical UI design
