Senior Superconducting Systems Engineer

Location: Tallahassee, FL

Team: Security & Infrastructure Protection

R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach. As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.

R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.

The Role

As a Senior Security Engineer (OT + Cloud), you will define and own the security architecture across R-Materials’ cloud platforms, edge control systems, and operational technology (OT). Your work will ensure that superconducting energy systems remain secure against cyber threats while maintaining availability, safety, and operational integrity. You will collaborate closely with cloud platform, embedded control, safety, and systems teams to embed security directly into system design. This is a senior role focused on architecture, threat modeling, and defense-in-depth for critical infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and own end-to-end security architecture across cloud, edge, and OT systems
• Lead threat modeling for cloud-controlled energy infrastructure
• Define authentication, authorization, and access control strategies for operators and systems
• Secure cloud-to-edge communication channels and control pathways
• Establish monitoring, logging, and incident response strategies
• Collaborate with safety and reliability teams to ensure security supports safe system behavior
• Support audits, vulnerability assessments, and compliance requirements
• Mentor engineers and promote security best practices across teams

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related STEM field plus 7+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent applied experience
• Strong experience securing cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
• Experience with OT, industrial control systems, or embedded environments
• Familiarity with security concepts such as zero trust, least privilege, and defense-in-depth
• Experience with network security, identity management, and encryption
• Ability to reason about security tradeoffs in safety-critical systems
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Nice to Have

• Experience securing critical infrastructure, energy systems, or industrial environments
• Familiarity with OT security standards (NIST, IEC 62443, etc.)
• Experience with incident response or red/blue team exercises
• Exposure to compliance frameworks relevant to infrastructure or energy systems

Export Compliance

This role may involve access to technologies subject to U.S. export control regulations.
Employment is contingent upon eligibility to comply with applicable export control laws.
