Superconducting Systems Engineer

Location: Tallahassee, FL

Team: Superconducting Energy Systems

R-Materials is building a new class of energy infrastructure based on superconducting wire systems, AI-based online control, and SMES energy storage, unlocking performance levels that conventional power systems cannot reach.

As global computing, AI, and energy demands accelerate, traditional copper-based infrastructure has reached its physical limits. We believe this moment demands a fundamentally different approach to how electricity is transmitted, controlled, and stored.

R-Materials is turning superconductivity into deployable, continuously operating infrastructure for data centers, energy systems, and critical facilities. If you are motivated by hard physical problems, real-world deployment, and the challenge of translating deep physics into operational systems, we’d love to hear from you.

The Role

As a Superconducting Systems Engineer, you will support the design, analysis, and validation of superconducting wire systems operating in real infrastructure environments. You will work closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, including mechanical, electrical, cryogenic, controls, AI, and cloud engineering, to help translate superconducting physics into measurable system behavior and deployable designs. This role is ideal for engineers who want hands-on exposure to first-of-kind energy systems while building deep expertise in superconducting infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyze electrical, thermal, and operational behavior of superconducting wire systems
• Support definition of operating limits, safety margins, and system constraints
• Assist in translating physical behavior into signals for control, monitoring, and AI systems
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and cryogenic teams on system integration
• Support laboratory testing, validation, and data analysis
• Contribute to system-level documentation and design reviews
• Assist with deployment and evaluation of early production systems
• Learn and apply best practices for safety, reliability, and system robustness

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or a related STEM field
• 2–5 years of experience in power systems, superconductivity, applied physics, or advanced energy projects
• Familiarity with electrical and/or thermal system modeling
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines
• Clear written and verbal communication skills

Nice to Have

• Exposure to superconducting materials or high-temperature superconductors (HTS)
• Familiarity with cryogenic systems or LN₂ operation
• Experience working in applied R&D or experimental engineering environments
• Interest in deploying systems beyond the laboratory

Export Compliance

This role may involve access to technologies subject to U.S. export control regulations.
Employment is contingent upon eligibility to comply with applicable export control laws.

Equal Opportunity

R-Materials is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Employment decisions are based on merit, competence, and qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected status.

Employment Type

Full-time

Compensation

Base salary range: $110,000 – $150,000 + equity
Salary will be based on several factors, including experience, expertise, and role level.

Comprehensive benefits package includes:
• Competitive compensation with equity
• Paid time off and company holidays
• Medical, dental, and vision coverage
• Paid parental leave
• 401(k) and retirement benefits
• Professional growth and learning opportunities

If you don’t meet 100% of the preferred qualifications, we encourage you to apply.
